Spaces

A place recorded, displaced and reconstructed through material traces and moving images.

TERRITORY

How can a physical place be recorded?

Research begun during residencies around Jyväskylä, Finland, treats a limited section of forest as an observational territory. A random walk leads to a clearing; four stakes and a fifteen-metre rope establish a perimeter related to the length of a Super 8 roll.

Impressions, photographs, collected matter and film do not document the place neutrally. They become partial carriers of a memory that changes as it is displaced and reconstructed in the exhibition space.

FIELD PROTOCOL

A place becomes a sequence of operations.

  1. 01Walk

Enter an unfamiliar forest without geographical tools.

  2. 02Delimit

Mark a site from its edge with rope and four metal stakes.

  3. 03Traverse

Film one continuous movement around the perimeter.

  4. 04Collect

Take material traces while leaving the territory intact.

  5. 05Recompose

Build a necessarily incomplete spatial memory in the gallery.

FILM

Movement existed in the work before motion design.

Super 8 records duration, traversal and optical uncertainty. The film is one element within a larger spatial reconstruction.

« un dialogue avec une mémoire de la lumière »

Françoise Docquiert

Docquiert reads the repeated stays in Jyväskylä as more than a geographical background. The brief Scandinavian seasons, family memory and a sustained dialogue with natural matter form the ground of the work.

She connects this research to Tomas Tranströmer, William James and Stan Brakhage: poetry, knowledge through experience and an experimental cinema released from conventional perspective.

The works shown at Montrouge are described as plural fragments of one enquiry—Super 8 loops, ground impressions, lichen, screen prints and painted surfaces. They resemble topographic records without becoming neutral observations.

Across cinema, printmaking and screen printing, the project investigates optical perception, retinal dynamics and visual confusion. Light is both the condition of the image and the unstable material through which memory returns.

Editorial synthesis based on Françoise Docquiert’s French text written for the 2018 Salon de Montrouge.
